The short answer
“Notify anyway” is Slack’s override for paused notifications: when someone sends you a direct message while your notifications are paused, they can choose to notify you about an urgent message, once per day. Slack’s help center doesn’t list a setting to switch it off, so your levers are a clear status, a VIP list and your iPhone’s own notification settings.
What notify anyway means in Slack
Slack pauses your notifications in a few ways: you tap Pause notifications, your notification schedule says you’re outside working hours, or a status pauses them until it clears. Whichever it is, the effect is the same. You don’t get notifications, and other people see a small snooze icon next to your name.
The override lives inside that pause. Slack’s help center puts it simply: when sending a direct message, people “can override this setting to notify you about an urgent message once per day.”
- It’s for direct messages. The help center describes it for DMs, not channel posts.
- It’s rationed. Once per day, which keeps it for things that really can’t wait.
- It’s the sender’s call. You don’t approve it. The message reaches you as a notification while the rest of Slack stays quiet.
What the sender sees, and what you get
The sender sees the snooze icon next to your name, so they know your notifications are paused before they write. When they send a DM, they get the choice to notify you anyway.
You get that one message as a notification, even if it’s 10 PM. Your iPhone still applies its own settings, though. If Slack’s notifications are off in iOS, or a Focus is silencing Slack, the override has nothing to come through.
What the sender sees about your hours is up to you. Slack can set an automatic status when it’s after your working hours, so people know you may be slow to respond. On desktop, go to Profile picturePreferences and look under Automatic statuses.
When should you use notify anyway?
If you’re the one sending, a quick check before you override saves everyone an evening.
- Look at their name. A snooze icon means paused. A status may already say when they’re back and who to ask instead.
- Check whether it’s after hours for them. Slack can show an automatic status when someone is past their working hours. If you work across time zones, your 6 PM may be their midnight.
- Send it plain first. Without the override, your DM still arrives. They see it when they resume or open Slack, which is right for almost everything.
- Save the override for real urgency. Something broken, a deadline tonight, a decision only they can make. Slack limits the override to once per day, so make it count.
Can you turn off notify anyway in Slack?
Not inside Slack, as far as its documentation goes. Slack’s help center describes the override as part of how paused notifications work and lists no setting, for you or for workspace admins, to disable it. We checked again on October 9, 2026.
What you can control is your phone:
- Turn Slack’s notifications off in iOS. Go to SettingsNotificationsSlack and turn off Allow Notifications. Nothing from Slack reaches your phone, override or not.
- Use a Focus that silences Slack. Apple’s Focus filters notifications on your iPhone, separately from Slack. If Time Sensitive Notifications appears under Slack in SettingsNotificationsSlack, turn it off too.
Set expectations so nobody needs it
Most overrides happen because the sender doesn’t know when you’ll be back. Two settings fix that.
A status with an end time
- On iPhone, tap your profile picture, then tap the status field.
- Type something specific, like “Offline until 9 AM. Call for real emergencies.”
- Tap Clear after and pick when it should disappear, then tap Done.
A VIP list
On paid plans you can mark people as VIPs and let their notifications through while you’re paused. On iPhone, add them under Profile picturePreferencesVIP List, then turn on Always allow notifications from VIPs under Notifications. On desktop, both live under Profile picturePreferencesVIP. Your manager reaches you without asking, and nobody else needs the override.
Notify anyway at 10 PM
An override is one message. The trouble is what happens after it: you open Slack to read it, then check one channel, then another. Set your hours properly first with how to stop Slack notifications after work, and if Slack keeps pausing at the wrong times, see how to turn off pause notifications in Slack. Going away for longer? Set an out of office status in Slack so people know who to ask instead.
Questions
What does notify anyway do in Slack?
It lets someone push an urgent direct message through while your notifications are paused. Slack allows this once per day.
Can I turn off notify anyway in Slack?
Slack’s help center doesn’t list a setting to disable it. To be fully silent, turn off Slack notifications in your iPhone settings or use a Focus that silences Slack.
Does notify anyway work outside my Slack notification schedule?
Outside your schedule, Slack treats your notifications as paused, and senders see the snooze icon. The same override for urgent direct messages applies.
How do I let my boss reach me when Slack is paused?
Add them to your VIP list and turn on Always allow notifications from VIPs. VIPs are available on paid Slack plans.
