Does Slack notify people when you leave a channel?

Leaving a channel changes who can see you in it, not just the alerts on your phone. Here is what Slack shows, which settings control it, and what to choose if you only want fewer interruptions.

The short answer

Slack can show a message when you leave a channel. By default, join and leave messages are displayed. If a workspace owner or admin turns them off, Slack says departures from public channels are hidden, but departures from private channels are still shown. Leaving without a public-channel message does not make the membership change invisible.

A channel message is different from a push alert

“Will Slack notify people?” can mean two things: will Slack put a departure message in the conversation, or will everyone’s phone buzz? Slack’s join and leave documentation describes messages displayed in the channel. It does not promise that leaving sends every member a push alert.

People can notice a channel message when they read the conversation, or notice that you are no longer a member. Their channel and device notification settings are a separate matter. A quiet phone is therefore not evidence that your departure was hidden, and a workspace setting that hides a message is not an anonymity feature.

If your aim is fewer interruptions rather than changing membership, start with muting a Slack channel while keeping it visible. You stay in the channel and can read it when you choose.

Public and private channels behave differently

Slack’s documented default is to display messages when someone joins, is added to, or leaves a channel. The important exception is what happens after the workspace turns join and leave messages off.

Departure messages in Slack
ChannelMessages enabledMessages disabled by the workspace
Public channelA departure message is displayed by defaultSlack says a public-channel departure message is not displayed
Private channelA departure message is displayed by defaultSlack says a private-channel departure message is still displayed

The rule about public-channel joins with more than 20 members is a separate join-message exception. It does not mean you need a 20-person channel to leave quietly, and it does not make private-channel departures silent. Check the departure rule for your channel rather than applying a join rule to leaving.

Before leaving a private channelYou cannot guarantee a silent departure. Slack documents that a departure message remains visible even when the workspace disables join and leave messages. You also lose access to that private channel’s messages and files in search.

Who can change join and leave messages?

Slack documents this control for Workspace Owners and Workspace Admins on Free, Pro and Business+ plans. It is a workspace preference, not a personal “leave silently” option you can choose in the channel menu.

  1. On desktop, click Admin in the sidebar and select Workspace settings.
  2. Find Channel Join & Leave Messages and click Expand.
  3. Check or uncheck Show a message when people join or leave channels.
  4. Click Save.

If you are a regular member, ask an owner or admin about the current setting. Do not assume it is off because you have not noticed recent departure messages. The setting affects the workspace’s message behavior; changing it just for one person’s departure may not be appropriate for the team.

How to leave a Slack channel

The steps below follow Slack’s leave-a-channel guide. Before confirming, consider whether you still need the channel’s history or a way to rejoin.

On desktop

  1. Open the channel you want to leave.
  2. Click the channel name in the conversation header.
  3. Click Leave channel.

On iPhone

  1. Open the channel in the Slack app.
  2. Tap its name in the conversation header.
  3. Tap Leave Channel.

For several inactive channels, Slack also documents a cleanup option in Manage my sidebar on desktop. Review each channel before leaving it. An old project channel and a private channel containing reference files may need different decisions.

Why you might not be able to leave

Slack’s restrictions depend on the channel and your role. Its leave-a-channel guide says no one can leave the general channel. A Single-Channel Guest cannot leave the one channel they can access. Multi-Channel Guests can leave private channels, but need an owner or admin to remove them from public channels.

Slack’s sidebar documentation also notes that Frontline Members cannot leave channels. If the Leave option is unavailable, check your role with your workspace administrator rather than treating it as a notification problem. Leaving a workspace is a different action from leaving one channel.

What happens to access, search and rejoining?

Leaving changes membership. It is not the same as hiding the channel from your sidebar. For a private channel, Slack says its messages and files no longer appear in your search results after you leave. Another member must add you back.

Regular members can generally browse and join public channels through the channel directory. Guest and Frontline roles have different rules, so do not assume that every account can rejoin on its own. Slack’s join-a-channel guide explains the distinction.

Leaving a channel does not archive or delete it for everyone else. If you want to keep reading the conversation but stop alerts, leaving sacrifices more access than you need.

When muting is the better choice

Choose the smallest change that solves the problem
Your goalUse thisWhat remains
No alerts from one channel, but read it laterMute the channel or adjust its notification settingsMembership and access to the conversation
Less clutter in your sidebarSidebar filters or hiding muted conversationsThe channel still exists and you remain a member
No longer participate in the channelLeave the channelOther members keep their access; rejoining rules apply to you
Stop work interruptions every eveningA Slack notification scheduleMessages still arrive and Slack still opens

Muting does not remove your membership and does not create a channel departure. It can hide the conversation from your sidebar, so use Show muted conversations if you want it easy to find. For a broader cleanup, work through the Slack notification checklist.

If the channel is useful during the working day, a recurring schedule may fit better than leaving and rejoining. The guide to stopping Slack notifications after work covers that setup. Let colleagues know when you will next respond if the channel expects your input.

Questions

Can you leave a Slack channel without a notification?

A departure message from a public channel can be hidden when the workspace disables join and leave messages. Slack says private-channel departures are still displayed. Neither setting guarantees that nobody can notice the membership change.

Does leaving a private Slack channel show a message?

Yes. Slack documents departure messages for private channels even when the workspace turns join and leave messages off.

Can I choose to leave silently just for myself?

Slack’s documented join and leave setting is controlled by workspace owners and admins, not a personal silent-departure switch.

Does muting a Slack channel tell people I left?

Muting does not make you leave. You remain a member and keep access to the channel, while its notifications are reduced.

Can I rejoin a private channel after leaving?

You need another member to add you back. Slack says the private channel’s messages and files stop appearing in your search results after you leave.
